Mairead McGuinness MEP for Sligo and first Vice-President of the European Parliament has paid tribute to fellow MEP Marian Harkin. Both women attended the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) annual dinner in the Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan on Saturday last.
In her speech Ms McGuinness commended the work of Ms Harkin in the European Parliament over the last 15 years.
“Marian has been an extraordinarily dedicated public representative with a strong focus on the community and voluntary sectors who has always kept the interests of her community to the fore in everything she does. It has been a pleasure to work alongside her on behalf of the people of Sligo and Midlands North-West.
“While she has chosen to not contest the forthcoming European election I fully expect she will remain an active member of the Sligo community.
“I would like to wish her the very best for her future, whatever direction it takes,” she said.
In her address Ms McGuinness also emphasised the key role of the transport sector in moving goods in and around Ireland and to and from our exports markets in the EU.
“Brexit, she said, is a key concern for this sector and everything possible must be done to avoid a hard Brexit.”
The IRHA was founded in 1973 to represent the interest of the Irish haulage industry at home and abroad.
