Mairead McGuinness MEP and first Vice-President of the European Parliament has congratulated Syddan GAA Club for its initiative in taking on the Healthy Club Project which aims to transform GAA clubs into health-enhancing hubs for their communities.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative at the club on Sunday (19th August) the MEP said:
“GAA clubs have always provided positive leadership in the community nurturing and fostering sporting activity and associated community events.
“Syddan is to be commended for its enthusiasm in taking on what is a natural extension to this by embracing a healthy eating programme and other such programmes providing members with supports not just for their physical but also their emotional and social wellbeing.
“These aspects of our lives are deeply interconnected. It is to the credit of Syddan GAA that they have reached out to take advantage of such programmes and make them available at Syddan,” she said.
The Healthy Club Project involves a wide range of elements including physical activity, healthy eating, mental fitness, gambling, alcohol and drug education, training and personal development, anti-bullying, anti-smoking and community development.
Ms McGuinness thanked all at Syddan GAA for a great day at the launch on Sunday telling them: “This community is going to reap the benefits of your commitment and efforts long into the future. Well done to all involved,” she said.
