Mairead McGuinness MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament is hosting members of the North South Youth Council Network in Brussels today (Wednesday), to highlight young people’s views on Brexit. The attendance of the group of 10 from counties Louth, Monaghan and Cavan, and Newry, Dungannon and Armagh at a series of high-level meetings in the European Parliament today follows the publication of their special report on the subject last year.

“As the North South Youth Council Network pointed out in their Brexit report, young people in both jurisdictions will be impacted greatly. I am hosting this group from the border counties, north and south, in Brussels today to allow them share their thoughts on Brexit and hear from MEPs, policymakers and others who work at EU level,” said McGuinness ahead of today’s meetings.

“In their assessment of the potential impact of Brexit, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs under the Reconciliation Fund, the North South Youth Council Network underlined the importance of transport, funding, education, employment and peace-building, and added that Brexit will have a much wider impact on all sectors and this needs to be reflected locally in the border counties.

“They said all negotiations need to respect the “Nothing about us, without us” ethos and include youth at every opportunity. Today, I welcome this engaged group of young people and encourage them to make their voices heard.”

The group of 10 will attend the launch of the Brexit and the Border Corridor report at the Northern Ireland Executive Office, Brussels this morning. Commissioned by the eleven border corridor councils it gives an overview of the potential impact of Brexit on the border corridor with an emphasis on the economic impact.

Later, the visitors will meet with other MEPs from Ireland and Northern Ireland, and attend a European Parliament Committee hearing on the Future of Europe which McGuinness will address.
