Mairead McGuinness, Midlands North-West MEP and first Vice-President of the European Parliament has congratulated the Northern and Western Regional Assembly encompassing Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Donegal, Roscommon, Galway, Cavan and Monaghan on being named as a European Entrepreneurial Region 2018.
This prestigious award – for their efforts in developing a resilient economy was made at a ceremony in the European Parliament on Wednesday evening (12th July).
“This is just one of three awards being made, with the others going to Greece and France,” Ms McGuinness said. “It identifies regions and cities with outstanding, future-orientated entrepreneurial strategies.
“The prize serves as a green light for potential investors, demonstrating that the Northern and Western region is a solid and dependable partner. It inspires confidence in investors for modern technology start-ups. The label acknowledges the excellent work of people in the area, particularly young people with talent and entrepreneurial spirit.”
“And it is a testament to the onerous efforts being made by those involved in the North-West to identify the issues and plan ahead and face challenges head-on. This commendable spirit is making its voice heard loud and clear in Brussels,” she said.
In June of this year Ms McGuinness wrote to the President of the Committee of the Regions, Mr Markku Markkula, supporting the bid for the title by the Northern and Western region.
It highlighted how the award would strengthen the region’s links across Europe, given the North West’s exposure to the effects of Brexit.
