Community Get Together to Save Collon Church
Following a visit to the Church of Ireland Parish Church in Collon, Co. Louth Mairead McGuinness MEP and First Vice-President of the European Parliament said a national conversation is needed about buildings of historic, cultural and religious interest to ensure such buildings are protected for future generations.
She complimented the local community for their efforts to maintain the historic building which dates from 1813 and is still in use. It is listed as a building of regional importance in terms of architectural, archaeological, historic and social value.
The immediate need is for money to re-roof the building – estimated at €150,000. This work is essential in order to protect the structure, including the very unique self supporting plaster ceiling.
